The two main divisions in boxing today are amateur and professional boxing. In amateur boxing, headgear is worn, and points are awarded. The length of a match is reduced to three rounds of three minutes each. Professional boxing contests, on the other hand, often go 10 to 12 rounds inside the ring. Headgear is not allowed, and fighters are required to take far more damage. It is relatively usual for boxers to start out as amateur competitors before moving on to the professional ranks.
